Start a Screen Recording in One Click, From Anywhere
Recording a quick video used to start from New, then Record a video. From release 1.350 there is a Record button at the top of the sidebar, an Option+R shortcut on every page, and a link, specloop.ai/record, that opens the recorder straight away from a bookmark, the dock or a launcher like Raycast.

Screen recordings arrived in release 1.339: up to ten minutes of your screen and your voice, saved to Videos and shareable with a link. Starting one took a few clicks: New, then Record a video. That is fine when you're already in Specloop. It is slow when you're in another app and want to show something before you lose the thought.
Release 1.350 adds three faster ways in. All three open the same recorder, so nothing about how a recording works or where it's kept has changed.
The Record button
There is now a red Record button at the top of the sidebar, under the Specloop logo, on every page of the console. One click opens the recorder. When the sidebar is collapsed it shrinks to a red dot, and while a recording is open it greys out so you can't start a second one by accident.
Option+R
Press Option+R on a Mac, or Alt+R on Windows, on any page of the console and the recorder opens. The shortcut does nothing while you're typing in a field, so it never gets in the way of a message or a note.
A link that starts recording: specloop.ai/record
specloop.ai/record opens a Record a video page with the recorder already showing. The page stays where it is, so you can keep it: every time it loads, the recorder opens. It is the piece that works from outside Specloop, because you can put it anywhere a link can go:
- A bookmark. Open specloop.ai/record, then press ⌘D on a Mac or Ctrl+D on Windows. The bookmark is one click from any tab.
- Your dock or desktop. Drag the padlock at the left of the address bar onto your dock or desktop.
- A launcher. In Raycast or Alfred, save it as a quicklink and give it a hotkey. On a Mac, the Shortcuts app can open it from a keyboard shortcut of your choice.
- The installed app. If you installed Specloop as an app from your browser, right-click its icon in the dock or taskbar and choose Record a video.
If you're not signed in, Specloop asks you to sign in first and then opens the recorder.
You can record anything on your screen
The recorder asks your browser to share a screen, a window or a tab, so what you record doesn't have to be Specloop. Choose Entire screen to talk through your own site, a spreadsheet, a design file or another app, and switch between them as you go. Tick Share audio in the browser's picker if the sound on your screen should be included, and keep Record my microphone on to talk over it.
Stop from the bar at the top of the Specloop tab, or with your browser's Stop sharing. You watch the recording straight away, then save it, download it or record again.
Where your recording goes
A recording started from the Record button, the shortcut or the link is saved to Videos. When you save it you choose the project it belongs to and whether the client can see it; nothing is shared until you say so. From there it works like any other recording: open it to watch, press Share for a link anyone can watch without an account, or post it into a conversation.
The original way in is still there too. New → Record a video opens the same recorder.
For clients
Clients record where the conversation already is: Record screen in Support chat, on any change request, and Record a video on their own Videos page. A client who opens specloop.ai/record lands on their Videos page, one click from recording. The Record button and the shortcut are for the team side of Specloop.
A few tips
- Bookmark the link today. It's the quickest of the three when you're not in Specloop.
- Use a computer. Phone and tablet browsers can't record their screen, so the Record button only appears on a laptop or desktop.
- On a Mac, allow screen recording once. The first time, macOS may ask you to let your browser record the screen in System Settings, then restart the browser.
Frequently asked
Questions people ask about this
- Option+R on a Mac, Alt+R on Windows. It works on any page of the Specloop console and does nothing while you're typing in a field.
