Microsoft 365 Migration Guide: Moving from GoDaddy to Direct Microsoft Management
Jason Gordon

👤 Part 1: What You Do First
Step 1: Request Domain Release from GoDaddy
Contact GoDaddy support and let them know you want to release your domain from their Microsoft 365 hosting. This unlocks the domain so it can be added to a new Microsoft tenant.
What to tell GoDaddy:
- • "I'd like to release my domain from GoDaddy's Microsoft 365 plan"
- • Confirm the domain name you want released
- • Ask for written confirmation once it's done
- • This usually takes 24–48 hours
Step 2: Verify the Release
Once GoDaddy confirms the release, verify that the domain is no longer tied to their tenant. Our team can help you confirm this if needed.
Tip: Keep your GoDaddy account active until the full migration is complete. Don't cancel anything yet — we'll tell you when it's safe.
🔧 Part 2: What Our Team Handles
Step 3: New Microsoft 365 Tenant Setup
We create a fresh Microsoft 365 tenant directly with Microsoft. This gives you full admin access, better pricing, and the complete Microsoft 365 experience.
Step 4: Domain Verification
We add your domain to the new tenant and verify ownership by updating DNS records. This proves to Microsoft that your organization controls the domain.
Step 5: DNS Configuration
We update your DNS records (MX, CNAME, TXT) to point to the new Microsoft 365 tenant. This is what actually routes your email to the new system.
Records we configure:
- • MX records — Routes incoming email
- • CNAME records — Autodiscover for Outlook
- • TXT records — SPF and domain verification
- • DKIM/DMARC — Email authentication and security
Step 6: FastTrack Email Migration
Using Microsoft's FastTrack migration tools, we move all your existing emails, contacts, and calendar data from the old GoDaddy-hosted tenant to the new one. Nothing gets lost.
Good news: Your email stays working throughout the migration. There's typically zero downtime — just a brief period where new mail might arrive in either the old or new mailbox.
Step 7: User Account Setup
We create user accounts in the new tenant, assign licenses, and configure security settings. Each user gets the same email address they had before.
✅ Part 3: What You Do After
Step 8: Update Devices
Sign into your email on your devices with the new credentials we provide. In most cases, Outlook will automatically detect the change and prompt you to re-authenticate.
Devices to update:
- • Desktop Outlook (Windows/Mac)
- • Outlook mobile app (iOS/Android)
- • Any other email clients or apps
- • Shared mailboxes or distribution lists
Step 9: Cancel GoDaddy Microsoft 365 Plan
Once everything is confirmed working on the new tenant, cancel your GoDaddy Microsoft 365 subscription. Keep your domain registration with GoDaddy if that's where it lives — just cancel the email hosting.
Important: Don't cancel until our team gives you the green light. We'll confirm all emails migrated and everything is working properly first.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Will there be any email downtime?
Minimal to none. DNS propagation can take up to 48 hours, but during that window, email is delivered to either the old or new mailbox — nothing is lost. Most users experience zero interruption.
What happens to my old emails?
Everything gets migrated — your inbox, sent mail, folders, contacts, and calendar events all move to the new tenant. Nothing is left behind.
Will my email address change?
No. You keep the exact same email addresses. The only thing that changes is the underlying hosting — from GoDaddy's tenant to your own direct Microsoft tenant.
Do I need a new password?
Yes, you'll get new credentials for the new tenant. We'll provide those securely. You'll use them to sign in on all your devices.
What if something goes wrong?
We keep the old tenant active until everything is confirmed working. If there's any issue, we can roll back. That's why we don't cancel GoDaddy until the very end.
